So...what can I write about?

Postby Adivina » Sun Apr 23, 2006 12:23 pm

I put this in current affairs because I don't want to get HURRRRRR retard answers. This is mildly sensative to me. You guys might remember a few threads back I mentioned how I was really not sure what I would do if my cousin ended up getting deployed, we are a small family hence we stick really really close to what little family we have. I think bringing my fears up jinxed me, because while I was working last night he came in to tell me good bye. It was pretty surreal, there I was running a 9 year olds birthday party, happy kids running and shouting all around me and all of a sudden there is my cousin telling me goodbye, promising me he would be careful, and telling me he would give me a mailing adress as soon as he could. Arg that sucked :( People like to scoff and thing the Navy has nothing to do with this war right now, but they neglect to think of things such as air craft carriers, which is exactly what he is going to be manning. I suppose its better than being in direct line of combat, but I still worry!

Anyway, my question goes to all of you who have been stationed or have had family stationed. What can I not write to him about and what can I write to him about? I definetly want to write him often so he knows we miss him and are thinking about him, but I don't want him to get letters so censored he can't read them. So I figured I would ask you guys the basics.

<3 ya all and thanks!

Write to him about everything. Write about what the neighbors kids are up to, what Aunt Milly did last week, what you had for supper. Write about the towns news, the school board's idiot proposals, what book you just got from the library.

What they miss is everday life, what they feel they're missing out on is their family and friends normal day to day. If you can 'bring him home' in a letter for 5 minutes, he'll probably read it over and over.

Don't nag. Use a lot of very descriptive content. Remember that the high point of his day will be reading letters that he gets from his friends and family. Last piece of advice, don't ever, EVER, tell him that what's he's doing there is a mistake even if you feel that way (not sure if you feel that way or not).

Thanks for pointing that out Jay, very valid point. I would never tell him that because this is not about how I feel about the war, this is about how proud I am of him for doing what he wanted to. I almost beaned his mother in the head when he first went away to training because she kept giving him shit all through the night about various crap. She's a little.... well she's not the best at being a nice human being. :P

Thanks for the replies, I wondered if like well I went to the park and so and so did this would just be boring to him or not, mainly I just want him to know I love him to bits and I am really proud of him and that I am gonna miss him like hell. :(

The good thing is he said he should have access to email, so letters won't be super slow. I think even if I get an email and regular ady I will still write a letter or two just because handwritten letters seem more thoughtful.

Boy he looks so different from when he went into training, he was already a great kid, real mature, but still you can tell he's grown up even more. It wasn't like I was hugging my "little" cousin goodbye anymore.... he's all big and sure of himself now.

If anyone is interested at all I uploaded a picture of him and my uncle when he came home on a break from training last year. He looks a bit different now as you would imagine, but I still think its a good picture.

I agree. When you handwrite, make it about things that your family did, what you did, things you saw on the way to work, stuff like that. Things he can invison himself.
For emails, keep those kind of short. I think they only get 30 min to a computer.

Yeah. Like a $1 a minute. I remember my friend Joel chatting with me on Yahoo IM for an hour or two at a time when he was over and thinking he was nuts to spend that much cash for access.

Adi, from personal experience the things I missed were the mundane, like Min said. Being on a carrier is alot easier then being on say a sub. Atleast on a carrier they can receive mail and letters alot more often. We could only recieve 3-120 word letters every 3months.

Certain of the new carriers have email now stations now. What carrier is he on?

Oh two totally different people. Justine was a girl from a lot further back. The girl in that thread was his most recent girlfriend. If he had ever told Justine that she was "perfect" I would have had him thrown in a fucking mental hospital. :P

Sorry to hear that Harri. Is she doing it for the military marriage raise?

Okay, after going back and reading the original post I realized that you, Adivina, were the one trying to censor your own letters to not upset him while he is deployed.

Anyway, anything you can tell him will be great for him to hear. Don't tell him news that will make him feel helpless. Like someone sick or hurt. He'll only feel like he is too far away to help in the situation and possibly cause undue stress. That's about all I can think of at the moment. I just remember being in the desert and looking forward to getting all that mail. It WAS the highlight of the week.

And don't worry about him. He's a big boy and made the decision to join the Navy. If he's smart, he'll be okay.

being a squid is not as dangerous as being a soldier. Unless he is a SEAL. he will want to know what your doing, even as mundane as saying "hey! I made a level in eq2." it does not sound like much to you but believe me every letter I got in the service was prized far more than gold.

I am sure anything you write will be fine.

My thoughts are with your cousin and every other ballsy motherfucker who puts his balls on the line for the freedom of my lazy ass and foreign lazy asses as well.

Sorry to hear it?

I booted her to the curb when she cheated on me when I was 18. Then a year or two later she was my pocket blowjob any time I wanted.

Wasn't a bad deal really, she was pro. No emotional attachment BJ station...

Sorry, I re-read my letter. He has to wait about 30 min for a computer to open up and he says he can have access in his little trailer if he pays an outragous service fee. He's not crazy so he waits.
So you're right.

Still, make the handwritten letters more important.
