It was consistent with his shtick, but I was disappointed that it came off so poorly, and really wasn't funny. His show is really good, but his routine last night stunk up the place and made him look bad. It seemed forced and not really comic. Especially after the Presidents quite funny routine with his imperrsonator.

If nobody in an audience full of Democratic media types is laughing at jokes making fun of W, then it ain't working.

That was so raw, I think even I would have had a tough time laughing if I was present. He was smearing shit in the presidents face. I think the audience was sincerely feeling sorry for GW.

Imo I don't think being "funny" was his prime motivator there - it was a bit too diverged from his usual 'style' - much more direct and biting than usual. He wasn't lightly poking fun at the president, he was FLAMING him right to his face. I think there was such little response since a lot of people probably considered it in really poor taste, or the sheer audacity of it was a little stunning, or probably more close to the truth: that it was insulting to them [the press] that the only person with any balls among them was a damned comedian.

Maybe that's it, Yam. Although given he still did and said a lot a la the Colbert Report character it seemed like it was attuned to the way his show was, just not funny.

It's easy to do what you want and be completely rude if you don't have to deal with anyone but your own spoof show. The people in the room are professionals, and can't be overt bridge burners, I think.

The monologue was hilarious. The video was rather stupid.

Most of his jokes were hits with the crowd. Some of the very personal stuff wasn't so good, but to say it wasn't funny overall .... could only be the opinion(spin) of a republican!
