Quasi Military?

not to say the Coast Guard is a walk(or cruise) in the park, but it isn't the most dangerous branch. especially not "far and away" the most dangerous. there are wars going on. last i checked the coast guard hasn't had thousands of casualties these past few years

From what I know of the military, the order of "most dangerous to least dangerous" would be something like this:

1. Marines
2. Army
3. Navy
4. Coast Guard
5. Air Force

Go army > Green berets > Delta force. You can get recruited into the delta force by any military branch but you would be more likely to get scouted out for it if you were in the green berets in the army. Only way to get into it is by being scouted out as I have heard and the goverment refuses to comment on the unit.

The Coast Guard does drug interdictions. They do ship boardings. They do coastal operations and SAR that are very, very dangerous. Casualties are not a result of danger, always. They do all this with antiquated equipment.

I've worked with all branches, including the Coast Guard and what they do is far and away much much more dangerous on average, in my opinion. Any reason why you don't think they are, outside of Iraq? You do know the Coast Guard does ship boardings in the Persian Gulf right?

If you check the average military deaths, they are about the same with or without the war in Iraq. The military is a dangerous job. Ever serve in any branch, Thon?

well sorry I was late on posting this...but first off it is great of you to be thinking of this. the two branches I would push for is US Navy and AirForce. Both have good schools and the training is superb.

To give you a background. most people know I was in Submarines for 4 years of my life and in that time I learned alot of things. first and foremost was self reliance and determination.

If you go to do it. My reccomendation is to not sign with any of the branches. Take the ASVAB first, then do what I did and walk from recruiter to recruiter and see what jobs are available for you with each one. I chose Submarines Radioman right off the bat as my designate and enjoy almost my whole time. Don't sign with any of them till they shit a fucking job listing you want.

I can speak from experience with the Sub Corp. It is not a job for everyone it takes alot of brain power and alot a determination just to get your qualifications done. Once you are done however there is a lot of respect for Submariners(refered to as bubbleheads). I dont think you could find a closer knit family in any of the other fields. When you become a submariner you become adopted to a family of 120 other bothers.. all of which will walk thru hell and back for you. The guys I went with all are the type of people that would drop everything in a moments notice, even now to help one of the others out.

Another thing about the boat is there is not a problem with prejudism, racism or a superiority thing between the other sailors. Racism is not a thing that is tolerated. There is usually alot of jovial jesting between ethnics and most times. If you have problems with a race situation you might as well forget even thinking about the boats.

Most people know me as fairly outspoken against the black sub culture that is rampant in the streets today...this lazy gansta crap is not a issue there. There is alot of weeding out on the boat for that crap...if you dont work dont carry your load, you find yourslef falling upstairs or meeting with a mysterious accident (yes they do happen) so alot of that lazy shit dont fly. the people I served with were Americans, not black, not white, not hispanics. There was no racial distinction.

Anyways I know this does not mean much coming from someone you never met but let me say it. Im proud you are actually thinking about it. As for Gidian, Proud of you too man. It takes alot of nerves and a yard of fucking guts to decide to do what you are planning.

I will have to agree with Kahar on a few things. My Dad was in the Navy. He was on a nuclear submarine. He never went to college, got out of the Navy and his starting pay was 6 figures at TU Electirc, and that was over 20 years ago.

how does chasing down Juan the cokemule in a 100 foot cutter compare to kicking down doors in Fallujah, or riding shotgun in a convoy in a possible combat zone? do people in the coast guard have where they sleep come under rocket and mortar fire?

if you take Iraq/Afghanistan out of the equation, i don't know. i don't live in the same fantasy land you do. in the reality i'm at, there are two occupations ongoing.

and please, please show some statistics to that asinine claim. as to how military deaths during a two-theatre war have not risen over peacetime. also don't forget to include the wounded as well, since they're casualties.

as for me, no i havn't served. i've thought about it, and talked to family members who have. they recommended the air force for the best quality of life and people.

as for you, how many combat situations were you in? how many confirmed kills do you have?

How old are you again?

I was in Kuwait during the first gulf war during the ground offensive. I was in Iraq in 1992 and 1993. I watched the Coast Guard board Iranian vessels flanked by gunships near minefields.

Oh, here you go. I'll wait for your apology, but doubt I'll get it.

Since I know you'll spin it here's my quote followed by the simple reasoning behind it

Lyion wrote:If you check the average military deaths, they are about the same with or without the war in Iraq. The military is a dangerous job.

Take a look at the actual US Military Casualty figures since 1980. If you do the math, you wil find quite a few surpises. First of all, let's compare numbers of US Military personnel that died during the first term of the last four presidents.

George W. Bush . . . . . 5187 (2001-2004)
Bill Clinton . . . . . . . . . 4302 (1993-1996)
George H.W. Bush . . . . 6223 (1989-1992)
Ronald Reagan . . . . . . 9163 (1981-1984)

In 2004, more soldiers died outside of Iraq and Afghanistan than died inside these two war zones (900 in these zones, 987 outside these zones).

You completely miss my point about the Coast Guard. Thats another thread, and I don't want to derail this one.

Back on glidepath.

why don't you read your own link. total deaths were 80% higher in 2004 than in 2002.

the only time there were more total deaths than during the time we've been in iraq/afghanistan we had over 600,000 more people in the service.

Why would having more people in the military cause more deaths than 'occupying' two countries. Hey, maybe that just proves my point. Imagine that.

Hmm, when did we occupy Afghanistan again?

Hey, imagine that. I was right on course with you!

Actually, they werent that big. 60% of them are pregnant but the other ones are either "of normal size" with a couple fattys sprinkled in. It's like that everywhere.
I know how long deployments are. I know that they get breaks in the middle though. Every single one, unless their paperwork gets caught up somewhere, which is slightly rare.
I am very proud of him. If this is what he wants to do, if this is the branch that he wants and the path he wants to go, I am behind him 210%.

you can quote the figures once, twice, ten thousand times, it doesn't change anything.

Lyion wrote:Why would having more people in the military cause more deaths than 'occupying' two countries. Hey, maybe that just proves my point. Imagine that.

what is your point? i've never disputed that the military is dangerous, or that people die during peacetime.

when there are 600,000 more people, that's 600,000 more people that might have accidents. it's a statistical certainty that there will be more deaths. to think otherwise is beyond the realm of logic. and in that chart you can only go back to 94 before the base # of troops starts to grow by hundreds of thousands per year over the most current data. you have to go to 1987 to find more deaths in one year, when there were 640,000+ more troops on duty than in 2004. that data just isn't comparable

the year we invaded Iraq, death #'s increase by 40% over the previous year. the next year, they're up almost 90% from before the war. is it a fucking coincidence? the numbers are not constant from before and during the war, you're dead fucking wrong.

if you want to know how old i am, answer how many confirmed kills you have, Rambo.

And Darcler... Don't become a fatty. No man wants to come home after a long deployment to a fat wife, especially if they have had shore leave in Korea.

Definitely go Air Force.

You won't be tested physically in any branch unless you go Teams in the Navy or Recon in the Marines.

If you are looking for attitude, go Marines but realize what you are getting into. It's a tough life although a lot love it.
