Looks like Exxon is heading toward yet another record breaking quarter in their profits.

Meanwhile, you and I are paying 3 bucks a gallon at the pump.

So then, if the price of oil / barrel is going up and it is because of this that they have to increase their prices - how does that explain their record profits quarter after quarter. Maaayyyybbbeeeee it's because they're using the oil market as an EXCUSE to jack up prices and screw us out of every dollar they can.

When are people going to pull their heads out of their asses and wake up to the fact we are being screwed over by big oil and have a president and congress that isn't going to do jack shit about it?

The President and Congress will do something about it as soon as we have a President and Congress that do not have a financial interest in big oil.

Kizzy, that is EXACTLY the mindset that the govt wants from you. There IS something you can do about it - vote their asses out of office.

The problem with this country is ignorance and misguided priorities.

Instead of worry about whether two tuggan and spazz can get married legally - how about we start voting on issues that REALLY matter? But, that's how the American people are - and thus - it is why this country is in the shape it's now. People don't vote on logic, they vote on emotion. W got elected a second time, not because the country was in better shape due his work - he got elected because his campaign played on the emotions of voters. "Hey I don't care if the economy is in trouble! I don't care if global warming is real! I don't care that the majority of graduates our high schools are pumping out can't read past a 6th grade level! I don't care that our jobs are being sold off to the lowest bidder overseas! -- by God W is going to stop homo's from getting married!!!!! THAT'S what's important!!!"

You CAN do something about it. Get out there and vote for a cand that will do something about it. And, if they don't you vote their ass out of office too.

When you stop caring and throw you hands in the air - they have won. That's exactly what they want.

how are you being screwed?

you're willingly buying the gas

if you think the prices are too high, stop buying

it's simple that way

We're being screwed because gas is necessity. If you want to get to work, to school, or to the grocery store you need gas. Unless you live in NYC or some other big town where you might be lucky enough to be able to walk every where.

The majority of Americans live around 30 minutes form their place of employment. How do you propose they get to work?

We're not talking about Pepsi where if you don't like the price you simply don't buy it. Again, we're talking about something you MUST have in order to live.

Exactly, it's supply and demand.

Americans have gotten to used to having everything handed to them. We lived miles away from work, because we can. We buy gas guzzling vehicles, because we can. We have ourselves to blame for the high prices. If we used a little common sense and carpooled, lived closer to work, bought fuel-efficient cars, etc. the prices would go down.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

I disagree.

We live miles from work, often because we have to. A lot of people work in industrial park type locations where there are no homes in the surrounding area. Some people work in locations where the price of a home, or rent is much more than they can afford. Still yet, there are people who work for company that might be out in the middle of no where - what you have them do? Build a tent next the company's property?

We can't buy fuel efficient cars because until recently there weren't any. Thanks to big oil lobby groups sleeping with big auto.

What are you going to do if you don't live near anyone you work with? How are you going to carpool then?

This particular issue has nothing to do with supply and demand. It has everything to do with a un-regulated company taking advantage of market conditions to fatten their already over bloated pockets.

Again, I shouln't have to point out that gas is a necessity, not a luxury.

I'll ask you this. Do you think what big oil is doing is really any different from what contractors did during last year's major hurricanes? "Hey I know that plywood used to cost $5 a sheet, but sinse you're house along with thousands of others was completely destroyed - I'm going to charge you $25 because I can!"

Hell no it's not.

I pray for the day when this country falls flat on it's greedy gluttonous face. I really do. We've let greed and gluttony destroy what once was the greatest country on the planet. Now rather than standing up to it, we defend it. We justify it.

If Exxon could come out tomorrow with a way to make a fat profit off murdering infants, you clueless and blind republican wanna be's would say anything to justify it.

Most liberals and moderates aren't opposed to companies or people, for that matter, making a profit. What we're against when profits take priority of the well being of the country as a whole. This isn't about Exxon potentially going into the red because of high price per barrel oil costs - this is about Exxon raping the American people for billions of dollars in RECORD profits for no other reason than they can get away with it because of an idiot president and a money loving congress who stand idly by and appluad them.

Funny how republicans try so very hard to project themselves as champions of Christianity, but in truth the only God they worship is a rectangular, green piece of paper.

I live in a pretty small town and I can get to Downtown Dallas (about a 30-45 minute ride) in a little over that using the bus. It's...what $30 a month for a pass?
There are also trains in bigger cities, we're just now getting a rail close to our town, that cuts the time from 45 min to about 20. About $2.50 for a day pass. I'm sure they have discounted month long passes.

You dont *need* a car anywhere unless you live in bumfuck egypt where the closest bus stop is an hour away. And even there, the gas prices would be lower :)

umm you do realize that US isn't laid out like France, Germany, or any other Euro country, don't you?

Unlike... umm France for example... we don't live in cities with tiny 2 foot wide streets with everything so compact tight and close by. The US is spread out. Not to mention that most countries in Europe are small enough to fit in Texas.

Japan is another good example. It doesn't really matter if gas is 50 dollars US per gallon to them. They don't own cars because they don't need them.

So you don't mind packing all your groceries under the bus while you ride it home? What if you need to buy a new living room set? What... you gonna strap that to the roof of the bus as well?

Not all cities and town have mass transit systems that are reliable, or for that matter even exist. My town doesn't have a train system... it's bus system is a joke. You can count on it being late, or not running at all. When you do manage to get on one, you better have your side arm with you... because your chances of getting held up are 10X higher than if you walked through da hood at 2am.

What are you going to do if you need to get to a place where no bus runs, where no trains are near by?

We've gotten insular and selfish. There is no sense of community anymore. How many of your neighbors do you really know? Do any of them work in the same industrial park? Do you even know?

We don't bother to find out because it might inconvenience us in some way. OMG a carpool might make me leave 15 minutes earlier than I normally do, screw that! If I get to know the neighbors they may want me to help them with something, forget that!

It's all about pre-packaged, drive up windows, fastest, least amount of effort everything in the US anymore.

There ARE places in this country where cars are not a necessity - but for the majority of us - they ARE.

I'm not moving to a shit hole like New York or Atlanta and pay 10 times the cost of living just so I can ride the bus to work.

It's much better to get those dip shit republicans out of office and get someone in there with some freaking common sense and put big oil in its place.

Ok, if you need to go grocery shopping, take your car. That should be a less than a mile trip.
I drive a Lancer, I cant load anything bigger than a stroller in there. If I needed to bring home furiture, I'd have the furniture company bring it to me, as it is part of their job.

I havent bought gas in a long time. I havent driven that car in a long time. The price of gas isnt bothering me because I buy it much less often that someone who is unwilling to take the bus or carpool.

Actually, yes I DO know where my coworkers live. Some do live close by, however, they work a different shift than I. Thus, we cannot carpool.

You're right... about people wasting fuel to get to the more frivolous locations they like to frequent. But, doesn't that help the ecomony? They're spending - MONEY - your leader's one true God.

Do any of you stop to think about the economic impact Exxon's actions are going to have on this country? About the money that "could" be being spent that now isn't because people can't afford to go out and spend it?

You're still not getting it are you?

SOME PEOPLE CAN'T TAKE THE BUS OR CARPOOL. NOT EVERYONE HAS THOSE MEANS AVAILABLE TO THEM.

You can't justify what Exxon is doing by saying, "well you're just to lazy to take the bus!" That's a piss poor position to take.

I don't care that they are making A profit. What I care about is that they are taking ADVANTAGE of market conditions and inflating their profits off our backs.

Making a profit for services renderded or products made is one thing. Making RECORD profits at the cost of our financial stability is entirely another.

and by the way... i drive a big SUV and make enough to where the cost of gas could be 5 dollars a gallon and it wouldn't hurt me. I still hate what Exxon is doing because I know it's hurting a LOT of people out there who are less fortunate than I.

I never asked about co-workers...I asked about neighbors (you know, those people that live near you).

If people are willing to pay it, then they have the right to charge it. Market conditions regulate the price. Government interference in commerce is never a good thing.

I totally agree with Diekan for the simple fact that the oil companies are turning larger profits than they ever have before. It should be very clear that without oil buisness would stop. Oil isn't a product we can just choose to stop using because we feel abused. Oil should be treated just like electricity. Regulated monopolies.
