[quote]Doughnuts in danger? NYC may ban trans fats
Health officials unveil proposal to bar substance in restaurants

NEW YORK - Three years after the city banned smoking in restaurants, health officials are talking about prohibiting something they say is almost as bad: artificial trans fatty acids.

The city health department unveiled a proposal Tuesday that would bar cooks at any of the city’s 24,600 food service establishments from using ingredients that contain the artery-clogging substance, commonly listed on food labels as partially hydrogenated oil.

Artificial trans fats are found in some shortenings, margarine and frying oils and turn up in foods from pie crusts to french fries to doughnuts.

Doctors agree that trans fats are unhealthy in nearly any amount, but a spokesman for the restaurant industry said he was stunned the city would seek to ban a legal ingredient found in millions of American kitchens.

“Labeling is one thing, but when they totally ban a product, it goes well beyond what we think is prudent and acceptable,â€

Oh, Crisco would be legal. It's not a modified vegetable oil.

It just has tons of cholesterol, which is why it's bad for you.

The culprits they're mainly talking about are vegetable oils that have been modified by saturating them, so that they're more solid at room temperature. Margerine, etc. Been known for a while now that margerine is way worse for you than butter, for that very reason.

That said, I think the ban is bullshit. People are adults, if they want to eat self-destructively, then they have every right to. Smoking is different, in that the smoke impacts everyone in a wide area around you. Short of passing gas, eating a doughnut doesn't exactly impact anyone else.

DA mode on

You know that isn't exactly true. Who will pay for that donut eating fat guy when he is in the hospital? Hmm, I think that could very likely be you and I if you follow.

This brings up a hijack of sorts, a debate I got in with my bro. I'll post in another thread to not hijack this one.

And you would be assuming that everyone who eats donuts are ouverweight. What about those who have some self control and treat themselves to the occasional donut and are not overweight at all?

I was worried for a moment that maybe the doughnuts had tiny little books in them the likes of : 'The Giver', 'The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn', 'The Communist Manifesto' and 'Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret'.

I'm not assuming this, and you are correct, not all folks that eat donuts are overweight.

The law is being imposed / proposed for a reason however and this reason is for folks that lack the ability you have, i.e. self control. So my point does stand as valid.

See the problem is this, if folks don't take care of themselves, and this lack of care causes detrimental impact to the society as a whole, and even worse, those that lack this care are also the majority of the populace, other then law, what option does society have?

For those that would say, forget them, let them die of heart failure, bla bla bla, our society won't let that happen. We'd sooner increase taxes to pay for the fat guy's medical bills.

For the record I think it is BS, hence my DA mode on statement (devils advocate =DA)

Well put. I guess NYC is assuming that only foods with trans-fat are responsible for obesity.

Some yahoo got the idea from somewhere, it isn't like the Dr. woke up one morning and said hey, lets actually try to get a law to ban trans-fats. A study was done and all that neat stuff that researchers and Dr.s do.

But I'll degress as we could debate this forever and a day.

DA off LOL

Like alcohol and tobacco. I guess the people at the trans-fat company forgot to pay their dues to the government this month.

If they worry about obesity, they should ban high fructose corn syrup.

Hmm I was thinking more along the lines of Taco Bell winning the restaruant chain wars as being the next news story, and that it may be time to give more serious thought into how the three sea shells work.

Yea I was actually thinking of Dennis Leary's rant in that film also.

try this too. Pick up a used ashtray and take a whiff. thats what you smell like after smoking. Perfumes etc don't cover it up.

add to that the risks 2nd hand smoke poses to children and other non-smokers. Plus what it does to your looks....

Cigarette smoke is disgusting. I hate it when I have to walk by people smoking in front of a store.

LOL

I used to joke about this type of thing all the time in the past. "When will they start telling us how many Big Macs we can eat because they're not good for us?" I used that line every time the seat belt law comes up.
