TV Tech help

I have a 27 Zenith TV that is 8 to 10 years old and when I watch a channel like espn that runs the scores and news at the bottom of the screen other then buying a new TV which isn't an option since I was Laid off from work is there anything I can do to fix it so I can see the scores?

You can, although I do not advise this, crack the case, find the proper potentiometer to adjust this setting.

Generally the are located on the circuit board just under or even attached to the back of the CRT. You'll need plastic adjustment tools and from there you can play with the pots and try to find the correct one.

Just know that you can also fubar the entire set

ground yourself and stay clear of the flyback transformer. There is enough current stored in that box to stop your heart. Seriously. Like Clakar said, most CRT's will have a serious of pots controlling picture size and position.

Yeah, be VERY VERY VERY careful if you open up the TV, you literally can kill yourself, or cause permanent damage. I knew someone in high school who literally had permanent feeling loss in his entire arm because of zapping himself trying to fix a TV.

This applies to all CRT's, not just televisions. Don't fuck around in them if you don't know what you are doing.

I used to service old Apple mac and other computer monitors, and would do TV's on the side. Back in the day I even used to use an osciliscope(sp).

Point being, and it has already been mentioned, you can, with relative ease one way shock yourself into death, no question.

Know you are working with very high voltage because the TV has to be on to do these adjustments.

I used to have this neat tool, I'd call it a discharger, you'd ground one end to duh ground, then slide this pin under the nipple that looks like a suction cup on the CRT, it would make this really cool sparking :hiphop:

A redneck "discharger" (of the non-feminine type LOL) would be a flat blade srew driver, and some 14 gauge wire, now that would make a nice spark but it would melt the end of you flat blade craftsmen too jeje

even if the CRT is turned off and unplugged, the charge is still there. A 27" 10 year old TV is not worth risking your life over. Look on Craigslist for a freebee. I see them all the time.

True true, in fact days can go by and it still hold enough charge to knock you out, foreva

Thx for the info all I got a new job that starts next week the pay really sucks and its a temp job. After seeing what I would have to do I guess I guess I will leave it as is with my luck it would catch on fire.We do have a 20" Tv in the bedroom and I can see everything on that one.
