Tabula Rasa

Post by Shneider »

His Imperial Majesty, Lord British.

I think it's ironic that most games that label themselves as MMORPG's have virtually no RPG elements to them--or about as much as Mario Bros. insofar as you're two plumbers saving the mushroom kingdom. Yet here we have a game where you make decisions on your character's progression with a story-telling aspect to the game with the action label before the RPG.

It's an interesting interview that shows a lot of insight into the genre and is more than hyping one's own game a la Brad or Tigole: "We're doing a lot of cool stuff."

I am curious how the PVP elements will turn out: King of hill style with WoW where the Zerg win invariably or different factions/guilds vying for imperial dominance over resources/economies. Given his monicker, I'll assume the latter.

I've been following the game for over a year now. Looks really good and has alot of potential. Now if they'd just give me a damn beta spot I'll be all set.

These 2 threads should be merged.

Silly ex-mod.....you know you can't merge threads....only split them. :P

Sounds very interesting.

VE3D: Which features of the game have you guys been focusing on most in the last few months?

Richard Garriott: I'd say missions and combat are the two areas we've been focusing on most. Hopefully what you got a taste of, even at E3, is what I believe is a powerful blend of user-interface style.

Instead of like with most MMOs in combat, you highlight a target, then you ignore the target, because he's just going to stand there and whack you—and you are staring at the interface and clicking
fireball/fireball/swordswing/healing potion—Tabula Rasa is a game where you're really shooting through the reticle.

You're constantly observing what's happening on the screen where you're aiming. It's still a role-playing game in the sense of when you shoot at something, it's based on your equipment and attributes as to who will be injured…but they're not just sitting there hitting you. Your opponent is moving and is aware of, say, if you're behind sand bags, he has a lower probability of hitting you, so he may instead run around to the side, kick you to the ground and start rifle-butting you as required, or however they can find their best position to engage you.

So it's no longer what I consider plodding-MMO-historical-type. This is an action-based role-playing game where you're having to pay more attention to what's going on on the battlefield.
What saves a man is to take a step. Then another step.

I can see where they took alot of the game mechanics and ideas straight from City of Heroes in that the instancing methods are alot like mayhem/safeguard missions in CoH in regards to the NPC helpers and side quests etc.

I want to play this game even more than I did before after watching that.
