How sad. Those morons. I don't think they should get life for an obvious accident. They wouldn't have fed the goddamn thing at all if they wanted it dead. They are just guilty of being stupid. And I think they have already paid that price with the loss of their child.

rofl whatever. "Obvious accident"? Do you know these people? There isn't a possibility that it could have been intentional and they were using the Vegan bullshit as a way to mask their real intentions?

No, let this be a lesson to all Vegan parents who want to take that risk with their baby. If it dies, you go to jail for life. If their baby dying isn't enough motivation to feed it correctly than maybe a lifetime prison sentence will be.

Either way, a baby is dead, they are to blame, they go to jail.

Or how about, the day care person accidentally shook the life out of your child because she had a migrain from partying the night before and your child wouldnt stop crying. Of course, no one should be punished because the death of the child is punishment enough for those responsible.

The bottom line is, these people considered the life of an animal more important than the life of their baby.

There is a point, if I were vegan and my baby wasnt gaining weight during crucial growing times and instead was losing weight, I'd rethink my beliefs for my child.

The real irony is that there are perfectly acceptible soy-based baby-formulas out there, that are just fine to give to infants. There was a perfectly viable baby food option open to them that was completely within their vegan beliefs, yet they didn't avail themselves of it. That more than anything proves to me it was neglect, rather than anything to do with them being Vegan.

The article Mart posted said that she did give soy formula. I dont believe that though.

p.s. soy baby formula smells like swarmy ass.

Darc, look at the video clip on CNN about it. They showed clips from inside their kitchen: all of the cubbords in the kitchen were completely empty, about the only thing in the fridge was Soy MILK (not formula, milk), and the cops said they only found 1 baby bottle in the entire house. Of course, the package of soy milk has printed on it a warning saying that you can't use it to feed infants. But still, if they HAD been giving it formula, there'd have to be some around, right? Plus, when you had infants, did you only have 1 bottle in the entire house? Somehow, I kinda doubt that.

Good god, no. We had bottles coming out of our ears. And when I did use formula (I started them on it when they were around 10 months old) I had canisters of the stuff everywhere. On counters, in diaper bags, in the pantry.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

*nod* I figured as much. These parents had none of that. No formula canisters in the fridge, none in the cubbords, nothing but that soy milk. Plus only 1 bottle.

So, that's why I think this is a case of idiot parents and neglect, rather than anything whatsoever to do with Veganism.

Doesn't make it any less tragic, though. :(

For my first, no I had bottles coming out of places you wouldnt expect bottles to be stored. With JJ, however, I use maybe 3 a day, and thats if I am lazy and dont feel like washing it after I feed him. I normally scrub it out after a feeding and put it on the rack. (Not defending these people, just saying how I roll). Pages are loading slow for me so I havent clicked links in awhile so I will check it out later.
Oh, we only have one can of formula at a time also. I divide it up into a formula...holder thing (it has 4 sections and a top with a hole at the top so you just open the section and pour it in the bottle.) or into ziplock bags when my 2 year old decides to hide the holder thingy.

You are correct, nothing we can say makes this any less tragic. Im sad for the baby :(

That just disgusts me that they'd do this to their own baby. If they wanted to put the baby on a vegan diet there's soy formula if the mother couldn't breastfeed for whatever reason. You'd never give a baby of that age regular milk, of any kind, for any reason I've ever heard of...their system just can't handle it. Apple juice?! Even if the baby was constipated you'd never give it to them on a regular basis or in high amounts, and there are better ways to handle that. Ignorance is not an excuse...they deserve the maximum sentence, imo.

Vegans Sentenced for Starving Their Baby
May 9 01:13 PM US/Eastern
By GREG BLUESTEIN
Associated Press Writer

ATLANTA (AP) - A vegan couple were sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for the death of their malnourished 6-week-old baby boy, who was fed a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice.

Superior Court Judge L.A. McConnell imposed the mandatory sentences on Jade Sanders, 27, and Lamont Thomas, 31. Their son, Crown Shakur, weighed just 3 1/2 pounds when he died of starvation on April 25, 2004.

The couple were found guilty May 2 of malice murder, felony murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children. A jury deliberated about seven hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

Defense lawyers said the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to the lifestyle of vegans, who typically use no animal products. They said Sanders and Thomas did not realize the baby, who was born at home, was in danger until minutes before he died.

But prosecutors said the couple intentionally neglected their child and refused to take him to the doctor even as the baby's body wasted away.

"No matter how many times they want to say, 'We're vegans, we're vegetarians,' that's not the issue in this case," said prosecutor Chuck Boring. "The child died because he was not fed. Period."

Although the life sentences were automatic, Sanders and Thomas begged for leniency before sentencing. Sanders urged the judge to look past his "perception" of the couple.

"I loved my son—and I did not starve him," she said.

When the judge told the defendants they could ask for a new trial, Thomas hung his head low.

"I'm dying every day in there," he said, "and that could take three years."
