Another tangent regarding role models...

interluding to pop stars, there are very very few Asian pop singers popular in the US... why is that?

Probably because they don't sing in English. D:

Unless you're talking about US popstars that have Asian skin. @@

That is what I am talking about.

Came across that topic today while I was discussing an artist that I had formerly never heard of =\

More and more Asian bands and singers are starting to perform in English. You'll see this more in countries like the Phillipines, Malaysia, and Singapore. English is actually the national language in Singapore; although Mandarin is also widely spoken.

A better fix would be to change the urban culture to not revolve around basketball and gangster rap, and promote morality, hard work, and professional careers.

that is the most mis-informed statement you've ever made, lyion. i like you and all but the day you actually go out on the streets and talk to a black person, you let me know. gangster rappers like 50 cent are the equivelant of justin timberlake and the only people that listen to shit like that are a small % of black youth and a huge percent of white youth. it's sad but it's reality, unless you're including hip-hop and visionaries like KRS-One or william griffin into the category of "gangster rap" which is probably just any person with a mic and a DJ in your opinion. that's a huge assumption, i know, but that's how you present yourself.

oh and also you're wrong about the goals being taught. like they put the children up clockwork-orange style in a room that's showing baseball tapes and playing led zeppelin so they'll never be anything like white people. jesus christ, man. just accept different culture. yeah some black people are gangster. some white people are too. it's not a reflection of the entire people. just remember that the circumference of your father's equality trancends any one man's universe. the gods and earths aka sons and daughters are walking and talking examples of that story

My post in actuality has little to do with Basketball and Rap, and more to do with urban culture and life, Drem, which I do know very well. I've lived and worked downtown <and done charity work> in L.A., Dallas, Baltimore, DC, and now near Cleveland and Detroit. I worked near Watts. I'd argue my knowledge is pretty good, since I'm a bit older and in a different situation, and was dirt poor in college in a VFW area.

The problem is one of role models and like it or not, many, many inner city kids without Dads look at rapping and hoops <and drugs, and other non standard careers> as their way out, instead of hard work and finding a day job. Because of the cultural issues they don't have the support system and father figures as guidance. Thats the crux of the problem, and it's far different from the wiglets who just like Gangsta Rap due to being rebellious and pissing off Mom and Dad in their Audi's, or a nerd attempt to be faux cool by emulating blacks.

The problems my post are about are incarceration, unemployment, single parenting, high school completion, and other cultural factors. That was the basis of my point and it's the problem. I know you are a big fan of Gangsta Rap, and I have no problem with it, even though it ain't my cup of tea. I love basketball. It likewise is not the problem. It is peripheral.

Anyways, the stats don't lie, and the urban stats pretty much show the truth of what I'm saying.
What saves a man is to take a step. Then another step.

whoa, you think i like gangster rap? how did you get that idea? i like hip hop from about '86 to '94 and a couple newer albums here and there but that's it. i don't listen to notorious BIG or Tupac or SNoop Dogg... think of it like this, rappers spit rhymes that are mostly illegal, MCs spit rhymes to uplift their people. i know you don't know anything about hip hop or rap, obviously, but at least educate yourself a little

the problem with what you're saying, to me, is that you're isolating it to black people. the problems you're talking about exist in the white youth, too. you're just acting like every black person is a gangster and every white person is a scholar. you're not arguing both sides, so you just sound arrogant
