Wow, the U.S. population has increased by over 100 million since I was born. As you navigate around in the site you'll find that on average, the U.S. gains an international migrant every 27 seconds. WTF?

I don't. It doesn't matter how long the process takes for an individual the only thing that would change the numbers realistically is setting a certain cap per year.
As it is the immigration system is an example of bureaucracy run amok. Decent "immigration reform" needs to address the issue, and I don't mean limiting back ground checks to 24 hours like previously proposed legislation. Federal agencies need reasonable time to do background checks, however I don't think it should take us years to make a decision on if we want to grant citizenship to someone.

Well even setting a realistic cap per year would be a step in the right direction.

Gyps, I understand your point of view in this matter because your boyfriend is from New Zealand, but the fact of the matter is that the U.S. is overpopulated. A major contributing factor to this is the flood of immigrants coming in. One way to slow down this unhealthy growth is to lengthen that process, or as Lueyen pointed out, to have a cap on immigrants allowed into the country.

at 80 people per square mile, that is pretty crowded!
Compared to say, Canada maybe... they only have 8.3 people per square mile.
But when you look at China at 363 /mi^3 or India at 852 /mi^3, I think you are getting your data from the wrong sources again.
Look at the growth over the past several years on the U.S. Census webpage. Look at the congestion in the metropolitan areas. Your example of 80 people per square mile is completely retarded because you're including rugged terrain and mountainous regions where people couldn't live anyway.

and when it takes years to get permanent residency (I'm talking legally here), tons of money, specific ways to show that you deserve to be here.. unless you've gone through the proper process I don't think you know exactly how lengthy and frustrating it is - I'm talking by the book permanent residency, not people who find workarounds, which there will always be. The process as it is is terrible and very strict. Of course there are people who will find loopholes, but for every person who does there's heaps who don't and who want to be here more than most natural born americans do.
Those stats don't specify the legality of the migrant, whether they're including temporary visas (ie just visiting) or if it's permanent residency or naturalization. It just says people coming over.

a lot of that is just wasted space, though - people own acres and acres of land and do nothing with it but go 4 wheeling, which is all good and well - good for them for having all that space, but it shouldn't be viewed as necessary land needed for feeding the country. i lived in a town of 1100 people.. everyone had at least an acre, and it took 20 minutes to get to the grocery store - dead land in between that was used for nothing but looking pretty. I don't much consider that overpopulated.
you look in areas like NY, southern florida, california suburbs, chicago.. yes, those are horrendously overcrowded, but by people who choose to live in those areas and typically love the city life.
i'd certainly rather someone from another country who wants more than anything to live here be able to migrate over here than susie openlegs who pops out another baby on welfare. people who legally migrate over here DO want to be over here, because as the process is, no one would go through it unless it was of great importance to them. foreigner who appreciates the country for what it is > random american born shmuck who thinks the world owes them something.
