I was going to call the tech guys later today and ask if they would be able to open the port for me but I have a sneaking suspicion that they won't. Any suggestions, I want to play

Apartment Network
So I am currently living in a student oriented apartment complex that provides highspeed internet access. Each bedroom is equipped with an ethernet jack. I have been playing a lot of CoD4 over winter break and upon returning to school I have found that I regularly ping 200-500 while playing from my apartment. I tested on CS and CS:S and my pings are never over 100. I think that this is closed port issue with the network as I have tested 28960 (cod4 port) with several fast online port checkers and they all report that the connection was refused. Could there be anything else causing this lag?

A closed port would not pass traffic at all. Running a tracert to the destination IP would give you an idea of where your latency is coming from.
Re: Apartment Network
Well, if that is the case why do I only encounter lag when playing CoD4 and no other games?
Re: Apartment Network
Here is a tracert to my usual server... I don't know the intricacies of interpreting these but from what I can see there aren't any major issues.. I'm stumped.

Sounds like a problem with the game engine itself.

Re: Apartment Network
Thats a lot of Level3 hops... too many in fact. That'd be a DNS issue perhaps?

Re: Apartment Network
Try using: 65.24.7.3 and 65.24.7.6 as your DNS servers and see if that changes the # of hops on the tracert?
Re: Apartment Network
I changed my DNS but nothing worked..

Re: Apartment Network
Just get your DNS from your DHCP server. You shouldn't need to mess with any of that. I think the problem is within the game code.
Re: Apartment Network
Well... I found a random server I ping fine to.. but that's what.. 1/10000 so I'm completely confused now. Could it be that my ISP just doesn't ping well to certain, random locations?

What do you mean Tossica? Are you implying that my issue is unfixable?

This is my first encounter with CoD4 having any network issues, and that includes playing steadily at two other locations.

10sun, that's not at all unusual for Level3, actually. I used to see that all the time back when I was working network issues.

It is just me then where I see at most 6 level3.net connections when I do perform tracerts & there is a level3.net connection, however I don't have a habit of checking TraceRt when I don't have issues for the most part unless someone else is.
Re: Apartment Network
Okay after looking around and connecting to various servers.. I ping 150 to servers located in Europe, primarily the UK.. this seems normal to me. However, the servers I ping 400+ to are all located in the US.. Is my ISP confused on where I am living or what? I can't figure out why I can ping normally to British servers and not American..

Re: Apartment Network
I wouldn't be concerned with all the hops in the level 3 network. The server your connecting to happens to be hosted on the Level 3 network and they do not have a direct link from Dallas to Chicago so there going to be a few hops between the 2, through Denver in your case.
What hours are you playing, and what hours did you test your connection to Europe?

Re: Apartment Network
The pings are pretty consistent at all hours, all tests were done in the middle of the day. I don't think that the time of day would change how I'm pinging to American servers only. It really makes no sense that I ping so high only to US servers..

Of course it would, you're sharing a connection with possibly thousands of students.
