I hadn't. I don't know what my reaction is yet, since the details are pretty vague. My first thought was of Katrina. Our troops were ready to help before Bush called them away because he wanted to make sure he blundered it himself.

Just from the article, it sure sounds like a pretty bunk deal on both sides - I'm sure there are lots of details involved that aren't discussed there, but it just sounds like bad news bears to me overall. I think it opens Canada up to threats that don't concern them (hell, they don't even concern us) because on the surface it sounds like forging an alliance, even if it just for civil matters. I mean what's going to be considered a civil matter?

I think Canada overall has a pretty good gig going; I've always said they're pretty much the answer to the world - no one messes with Canada because they don't mess with anyone. I don't see why anyone would want to alter that. Granted I'm no canadian government pro and certainly don't know all the details of this particular agreement~

Just to clarify, we do mess with people from time to time, we just don't start the fight.

On right-wing blogs in the U.S. it is being used as evidence of a plan for a "North American union" where foreign troops, not bound by U.S. laws, could be used by the American federal government to override local authorities.

"Co-operative militaries on Home Soil!" notes one website. "The next time your town has a 'national emergency,' don't be surprised if Canadian soldiers respond. And remember - Canadian military aren't bound by posse comitatus."

But I guess I'd rather have Canadians mucking about than blue helmets.

Wouldn't it funny if out of the blue we invaded some country.

most of the blue helmets that actually do anything are Canadian, anyway

I personally think it's not a good idea. I know that I'm just shocked the USA would write in specifically a provision for oil pipelines
