How is this the little guy?

It may be legal to have that sign up, but I sure as hell wouldn't ever buy something there.

The shop owner seems like a racist prick to me.

this would be because you dont know your ass from a hole in the ground.

again.

Geno's and Pat's ( accross the street ) are philadelphia landmarks. Geno's has never refused service to anyone on a language basis. His point is simple and I agree with it. its not like he is saying you have to have a strong command of the language, just be able to say what you want so it can be understood.

Whiz/Wit is all you need..

I tend to agree with Zan a lot, but in this regard, I don't know - I think perhaps they were a bit rude about it, but when at a restaurant the employees (read: people who make 6-7 an hour) shouldn't have to be bi-lingual to cater to someone else in an english speaking country.

I mean, if I went to france or italy or germany I wouldn't expect them to translate for me wherever I ordered food.. I'd likely carry a translating dictionary with me. It's just courtesy - if you don't know the language, learn enough to be functional, especially at a restaurant as run of the mill as a sandwich shop.

No, but if you legally immigrated to France but had a strong accent, would you think it rude if a restaurant had a sign that said "This is France: WHEN ORDERING PLEASE SPEAK FRENCH!".

Of course you would.

You'd think someone who owns a restaurant named Geno's would be a little more sensitive towards landed immigrants, but the US is never short of hypocrites.

Considering earlier immigrants eagerly learned English so they'd fit in better with their new country instead of coming here illegally and then expecting the country to fit to them, I'd say your statement has no bearing.

Actually no it would just make sense. If i had actually moved there Then gaining the ability to speak the language just makes sense and considering the French are mostly a bunch of rude fucks to begin with, this wouldnt suprise me.

the concept of fitting in your surroundings apparently escapes you

I think the fact that you claim to have knowledge about both current and past immigrants just proves how eager you are to rewrite history to have it mesh without your pessimistic view of people (mostly foreign).

No, it doesn't make sense. It serves no purpose. Who doesn't know the US is an English speaking country? Its only purpose is demean people who are struggling to learn a new language (which I'm sure his ancestors did at one point).

Yes, because none of my ancestors were immigrants....

Shit, you mean your family has nothing but glowing things to say about your ancestors? Damn, that is very unusual. I'm sure they're way more awesome than those fence jumping Mexican’s that where funny cloths and don't speak good English.

When I was in France if I couldn't pronounce whatever it was that I wanted I just pointed to it. No big deal.

it doesn't say that they have a strong accent that I read, it doesn't say please leave your accent at the door, it just says speak english

personally i wouldn't be offended in the least if i visited another country and they had a sign requesting you speak their native language. if i was struggling to learn french and couldn't go to a restaurant and order in french, I'd just make a sandwich at home myself. eating out is a privilege and a luxury, it's not a necessity.. i mean if they were going into an immigration office and they had a sign that said that, it'd be totally different imo.

we're talking about a sandwich shop here, and i saw that shop on food network actually.. it's super fast paced, really long line, more like a kiosk than a restaurant really - you just go and say with or without.. it's not like a long complex menu. you can watch the 5 people in front of you order and get the gist. honestly, if you can't learn the 2 words and get offended by that, you're a little over the top easily offended.

i'm all for immigration to wherever you want to live (hi, i have my own immigrant) - i don't care where you want to live, i think you should be able to live there if you're a law abiding citizen - however, i also fully believe that no matter where you want to live, if you desire to live there enough to actually pack up and move for whatever reason you want to live there, then the country should be of enough import to you to adapt to the culture. if you don't want to adapt to the culture, why do you want to live there? you can have your own culture where you already are.

You know, we have immigrants here too, many of them. You know what I do if I speak to one that has trouble with English (or French). I take another 10 seconds out of my day to make sure they understand. I don't treat them like monsters.

Which do you think it more conducive to creating a productive member of society?

you know what's funny about this whole ordeal though

if they were really bad at speaking english, could they really read the sign to actually be offended by it?!
