California Supreme Court legalizes gay marriage

Postby Arlos » Thu May 15, 2008 12:36 pm

The religious right out there are no doubt falling down in fits of apoplexy. ;)

Wonder how much of a ripple effect this will have elsewhere? Supposedly, the California Supreme Court is one of the most influential ones in the nation. Also, before anyone goes there, 6 of the 7 members on the court were appointed by Republicans, so it's also a fairly conservative court.

Thoughts?

I don't understand why the church wants to prevent gay people from being as miserable as straight people

Yeah, it's pretty fantastic how 4 arrogant radical activist judges can just overrule an initiative that was voted down by the majority of the residents of California twice, thereby flipping the bird to the U.S. Constitution, the majority of California residents, and our voting system. Those 4 judges should be disbarred.

by that same logic, bush should've already been impeached.

I will vote down a bill that would let you walk in public because you are left handed, but that doesn't mean it would be constitutional to deny you that right in the first place.

Denying people basic liberties in life because they want to do something a little bit different, but with the same message is pretty constitutional huh?

Do you relish not letting people be happy together in a state condoned union?
Would you prefer that there be no formal social bond permitted for these people seeking to make their unions permanent?

What the fuck is wrong with you where you take issue with people doing something that makes them happy and doesn't harm anybody else in any way?

You're right, it was - and I knew you were going to reply with that, so I had a response all ready for you. Don't post rhetorical questions, they're pointless and obvious attention-whoring. It's terribly unflattering; I figured posting a response to your rhetorical question might drop that hint, but it clearly didn't - and now you've gone and engaged yourself in a useless conversation that could've been avoided by simply realizing my post was a fairly polite way of addressing your unnecessary and irrelevant douchebaggery.

You two should just screw and get it over with. Watching you squabble is like watching an old ep of Moonlighting....only not as entertaining.

I was just thinking to myself "when will Martrae comment!" ;)

and honestly, that logic is absurd. happy relationship with hot guy who treats me like gold > fat judgmental cynical dickhead, sorry to disappoint :(

anyhow, back to the topic at hand: I think Tuggan makes a good point about how they should've waited until after the elections; it'll certainly put the issue to the forefront again (as far as pot-stirring, anyhow) but either way I think it's a step in the right direction.

And after more thought myself I'm wondering if that was a hidden agenda of the republicans that ruled for this. The general populace is something like 60/40 against gay marriage. This could cause some independents to sway to McCain. I don't think this will bring any additional issue to the DNC nominee but once that nominee is 100%, I can see this being a big deal. Perhaps the lefties fell into a sneaky little trap set by the righties

I considered that for a second as well, but I don't want to be the one jumping on the conspiracy theory wagon yet ;)

Entirely one way...

I don't even acknowledge her existence until she jumps on my every post.

fat judgmental cynical dickhead

Thanks

If you left out fat you'd probably be a bit more accurate. Though I am secretly an optimist, though.

i think he believes it should up to the state to decide, which i agree with. but he also pushed to try and help ban gay marriage in arizona.

i dont doubt for a second it was pushed through to put this issue back on the center stage. gotta get those evangelicals fired up again come election time.

What do you think all the leftists who voted against this are doing?
