well... it perhaps depends on how far gone it is? I got an all-clad 12" skillet for my birthday a couple years ago and it got that yucky oil stuff on it. Took me til a couple months ago to think to try the Eraser on it. I can't get it ALL off, but I keep plugging away at it! It's nearly all gone now. Go me. It also works very well on pyrex for getting those stubborn bits off. And if you keep your tea kettle on the burner all the time, and it gets splattered and gross because you no longer see things that are in front of your face every day? yeah, depending on what's in my hand when I see it, I'll either use baking soda, or Mr Eraser. Baking soda works on lots of things that you'd think would never get clean, either.
The other great degreaser I use is called Red Juice from the Clean Team. It is not smelly, but it DOES give me a skin reaction if I don't wash after cleaning with it. Yeah, I really should wear gloves.
If you get really desperate, you might consider a Pumie. It's a pumice stick that never scratches porcelain (sinks etc) but I never tried it on stainless steel.
I can't use any of the hardcore cleaners. "Normal" cleaners (like Windex or Comet or any of those) I can't use either, due to smells and skin reactions. But between baking soda, red juice, and a Pumie I cleaned nearly everything when I did pro house cleaning. Add the magic erasers and microfiber cleaning cloths, and you've got a very effective non-toxic cleanup kit.
Try the Eraser on your pan and see what happens? It WILL disintegrate, so be prepared for that and use a strainer in your sink so it doesn't all go down the drain ><
