Re: Great Rock Vocalists
Chester screams too much. to the point he had to have an operation to remove palyps.
For you

Re: Great Rock Vocalists
It's true he does scream a lot. But he is the best screamer I've ever heard.

Re: Great Rock Vocalists
I actually don't mind Chester
I wouldn't pay money to see him live tho.
greatest rock vocalist of all time is probably Freddie Mercury tho. definitely the most versatile

you're kidding right?
nope, not at all. can you guys even say anything bad about Cobain? other than he was mind-numbingly famous and you don't like him because 50,000,000 other people like him too and he's the poster child for a sad depressed musician? because i can look past all that and listen to his demo and home recordings and some amazing live work (even unplugged was pretty good) and walk away totally satisfied. he fit his style of music extremely well. and in case you can't tell, i'm just comparing him to his contemporaries. i can't think of any better rock vocalist in the early '90s that was still putting out important records
if you're comparing him to a singer like freddie mercury then that's retarded because they're not even similar at all, other than they both sang in bands. let's compare bach to bartok next

there isn't a best rock vocalist, because everyone listens to different kinds of rock. i'll never give freddie mercury the kind of credit you think he deserves because Queen actually makes me laugh IRL when i hear it. it just sounds so transsexual and lame. and i'm sure you feel the same about Nirvana
since you guys posted a screamer, tho, i think my favorite metal or hard rock or whatever vocalist is Jay Frechette from Cave In
Re: Great Rock Vocalists
I listen to Nirvana quite a bit and like it.
I just don't give him anywhere near that level of credit as you do. I don't find him that talented as a vocalist.

cobain was like dylan, to a certain extent
highly influential, had some great songs, but not a good vocalist by any stretch
yeah we get it, you were 9-10 when you fell in love with nirvana, and he's your favourite
but he's not a great vocalist, get over it
Re: Great Rock Vocalists
well if you are going to be strict rock and roll
i would say roy orbison hands down
elvis presley hasnt been mentioned
annie lennox
ani defranco

Re: Great Rock Vocalists
urgh i was going to make an argument about cobain
but then i would be breaking my self-imposed moratorium on arguing matters of taste in this thread
so i erased it

Well, you can argue actual singing ability without delving into taste.

and here's you sounding like an arrogant prick
i almost wrote "before you assume that i have posters of kurt cobain, every album, and know how to play the power chords to every single song...." but i didn't actually think you'd try to draw that stereotype
kurt cobain? my favorite since i fell in love with nirvana? hahahaha. i own unplugged. my love is truly undying

we just think different. get over it. dylan, to me, is a lot more exciting than freddie mercury. dylan's first two records make me feel weird and uncomfortable. it's like woody guthrie v2.0. and queen makes me actually laugh IRL. i just can't take it seriously
Re: Great Rock Vocalists
imo Dylan cant sing for shit. However he is one of the top songwriters and arrangers ever.
btw there are 2 issues with a "best vocalist" thing
1. great singers tend to get discounted cause they only perform in 1 style.
2. this is all personal preference.

Dylan was TERRIBLE... who ever let him near a mic should have been shot. Music business guru, yes. Great singer? Not even close.
Anyone mention Chris Cornel yet?

the difference is your interpretation of a good singer is based on grade-school standards for singing "properly" and anything outside that norm "sucks"
