Atkins diet

Postby Narrock » Tue Jul 26, 2011 1:59 pm

So, I wanted to shed a few pounds of baby fat (lol) and started the Atkins diet in March. I got the book called "The new Atkins for a new you." Apparently, there's been a lot of new discoveries with science and health since the first Atkins books came out over 20 years ago. Ends up that all those nonfat and lowfat foods are pointless, and that you should instead focus on cutting back on starchy carbohydrates. Our bodies are designed to metabolize fat. In March I was 218 and a 36" waist (at 6' tall) when I started. Now 4 months later I'm a 33" waist bordering on 32" and 188. My goal is 180. All I did was stop eating potatoes, rice, pasta, and bread, and refined sugars. I just had labs done last week, and had a checkup at the doctor. My blood pressure went down, my bad cholesterol went down (even though I've been eating a shit-ton of beef), and my glucose is normal, PSA panel was normal (just for men though). My good cholesterol was too low so the doctor told me to take 1000 mg's of Flush-Free Niacin every day to raise that. Other than that... a clean bill of health. So, if you have either a little or a lot of weight to shed, I highly recommend this book. All you have to read is the first couple chapters. From the middle of the book towards the end, is just recipes and stuff.

be very, very careful with Atkins. Yes, you'll lose weight quickly, but low glycemic carbs are good for you and there is such thing as too much meat.. definitely be careful with the beef.

My dad's diabetic (type 2, self inflicted) and still ate like total garbage, but every time he went to the doctor his numbers were fine so he'd pat himself on the back and reward himself with a big steak dinner, etc. Then when he passed out last year and ended up not leaving the hospital until he had 3 stints and a balloon due to 3 90% blockages and 1 70% blockage in his arteries, he realized that leaving the doctor with seemingly great numbers doesn't always tell the whole story.

Lots of people (not saying you) misinterpret Atkins and think that since they're losing weight they can eat unlimited amounts of anything but carbs and that can pretty quickly lead to other health problems. You'll be skinny, but that doesn't mean healthy.

also once you start eating carbs again your body will be very sensitive to them, meaning they'll affect your weight more easily than before. which sucks. i lost 95 pounds doing low-carb and then gained back half of it. so, seriously, proceed with caution--it's much better to just go slow and steady and practice portion control combined with exercise.

in my years of experience i've decided that it just isn't sustainable long-term to cut out large swaths of your diet. it's better to learn how to use food as fuel and practice moderation than to say "welp, i guess i'm not eating starch ever again." it's unrealistic and messes with your body chemistry.

Well what the book states several times over is that you want to avoid trans-fats and saturated fats. I know I've been eating a lot of red meat lately, but my bad cholesterol is 65 lol. They say anything under 100 is where you want to be. I eat a lot of salads too. I can start cutting back on red meat though, np.

i think the only really important dietary aspect of your life is your intake of high fructose syrup. because it should be none

much more important than other fads or reverse evolution like vegetarianism or "gluten free" or the atkins crap

there's really nothing in our diets i'm tragically afraid of except high fructose corn syrup. because even in moderation it's still terrible for you. i haven't had soda for years and i don't miss it at all. my skin is healthier and i feel a lot better than i ever did (i used to drink soda a lot. a lot. mountain dew & video games plz)

juice two oranges + one lemon + one lime with some ice and that's all i need baby

PS: leah's right. as soon as you start eating carbs again you'll gain the weight back. also gordon ramsay says atkins lowers your libido. /pass

You do know high fructose syrup is the same as regular sugar?

Thankfully we have "throwback" pepsi and mountain dew that is made with "real" sugar. Sugar is bad, and sugary drinks are bad. Doesn't matter if they extracted the sugar from beats, corn or anything else. It's all the same.

i don't know if i'd consider gluten-free a fad diet necessarily... most of the people i know who eat gluten-free do so because of celiac, which is a shitty condition.

ANYWAY! i quit drinking soda (diet or regular) during lent and haven't gone back. it's been a lot easier than i thought it would be! now i just drink shitloads of water and iced tea and sparkling water (like la croix or canada dry sparkling water). i'm very happy with my decision. soda is a nutritionless load of crap.

yeah it's chemically similar but i'm not a fan of processed food. studies as to it being officially worse or not are inconclusive but knowing how HFS is made makes me not want anything to do with it. also i don't think it tastes as good as crystalline sucrose or stevia

and yes, i realise there are legitimate allergies to gluten, like most other things, but i guarantee most gluten free people just do it because they can or think they need to

Corn and sugar aren't quite the same thing, actually. My nephew (6 years old) has a corn allergy, and if he has anything with corn syrup, he basically ends up going berserk 9 times out of 10. This does NOT happen with sugar. Unfortunately, he is ALSO Celiac, so his choices of what to eat get pretty limited.

I drink a soda every month or so. I drink about 3 cans of Red Bull a month. That's the extent of my soda intake. I just can't take it now. So syrupy and gross. Mexican coke is still good but it's so rare I'll drink one.

I don't consume ANY high fructose syrup, or fructose either. One of my daily vitamins is Resveratrol, which is the anti-oxidant benefit you get from fruit. I take it because I don't eat fruit.

actually that's another thing that always bugged me about the atkins diet: how can something so fundamentally healthy as FRUIT be outlawed by a diet?! very perplexing.

I know it's weird because we've been raised on "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" and all that bullshit. Fact is, fruit is overloaded with sugar, which converts to fat in your body (unless you do massive amounts of cardiovascular exercise to burn it off.

well i know that that's the reasoning behind it--remember, atkins alum here--but i just can't get behind it. it's healthy, unprocessed sugar, you know? i just don't see how it can be that big a deal in moderation. /shrug

Atkins is stupid

You shed a bunch of water weight initially but it's not sustainable

Realistically it's caloric intake Vs your metabolism.

Anything else is semantics

lol You're a tard. I haven't lost 32 pounds of water weight. Water weight is only a few pounds. The rest is fat loss.

Yeah, if you do cardio at least 3x a week, then you're ok eating fruit. If you live a sedentary lifestyle and eat lots of fruit, you will get fat.

Again, talking out of your ass. Do you actually know anything about anything? In all seriousness... you're ridiculous with your unsubstantiated and ignorant comments. You have a serious problem with reality. They probably make a pill you should take.
