Being a Fan

Postby Diekan » Sun Oct 10, 2004 9:28 pm

I’ll start this post with a question: what makes you a fan of your chosen team? Is it simply proximity, the uniforms, the players?

I’ve been a Bills fan for many years, but lately I have noticed that I have been losing more than just my faith that they’ll eventually get lucky and win a game. Quite frankly I don’t care what people on the Intraweb think of me, so I’ll come out and say that I actually felt a “magic,” or rather a “connection” with the Bills of the early 90’s. I referred to them as “we,” as in “we won last Sunday…” But, I am now catching myself referring to them as just that… “they.” “They lost again…”

I suppose it’s hard to foster any support for a group of people who don’t seem to care, nor are putting up much of an effort. And, it seems that pretty much describes the Bills of today, and of the past several years, pretty well. A completely different crop of people, with completely different motivations.

It’s not a matter of losing records, but something else I can’t quite put my finger on. I guess that on some scale, when the Bills of the late 80’s and early 90’s finally dwindled away from retirements and free agency, my fandom started to wilt. Perhaps I was simply more of a Kelly, Smith, Reed, and Thomas fan than actual Buffalo Bills uniform fan.

My friends and coworkers have been pushing me to support the Falcons, and thus I’ve noticed they seem to be more fans of their particular team due to proximity (A-town is all of 4 hours away).

They’re [the Bills] are off to yet another fine start of 0-4, and I’m losing more and more interest in seeing them play. I think that in some respect if they actually seemed like they cared, or even tried, I could over look the loses, but that’s not the case and anyone who’s seen a Bills game this year knows what I’m talking about. Drew “the statue” Bledsoe has the mobility of a geriatric paraplegic and the throwing accuracy of Corky [see the 1990’s television drama “Life Goes On” for reference], and despite this he manages to get started each and every weekend. It seems that the over all moral of the team is equivalent to that of a man who’s been recently laid-off from his job and just found out his wife has been gangbanging his poker buddies every Wednesday afternoon (no wonder they never invited him to go to lunch with them on Wednesdays).

I honestly don’t know why I’ve been losing my fandom and support for the Bills… Maybe it’s time to embrace a new team. And, before I’m called a ban wagoner, let me just say that I don’t really care if they’re 0-4 or 4-0, it’s not an issue of wins or loses. I was *there* when they lost 4 Super Bowls in a row... I was a fan even though the rest of the country couldn't get past calling them losers (while their team either never made it to the play-offs, or lost IN the play-offs).

lmao my friend named his beagle Corky for that reference.

Anyway. I'm a Vikings fan because my dad is a Vikings fan. It's how I grew up, and I wore Vikings jersey's or hats or jackets no matter what their record was, no matter how many seasons in a row they didn't make the playoffs. And I stick with them, because years like I think this one is going to be like, make it all the more sweeter. Also, I'm half Norwegien, so it just seems appropriate that I root for the Vikings.

I grew up in new england, and so I always felt a connection for my hometeam. Same with the red sox.

When I went to that parade in boston with 1.5 million people, after we won the superbowl...I felt special

All there for the same reason, everyone had something in common. :boots:

(and the dumbasses with their yankee hats werent treated too well, what fucking dumbass walks around boston with a yankees hat on?)

Oh, so you're saying you're selling your team out to become a bandwagoneer? MY Dolphins are 0-4 and might win 2 games all year and I still love them.

Has Bledsoe ever been mobile? The line is just awful. If they give him time, he throws well. More 40+ yard completions this year than last, already. I am a Bills fan and have been since I was able to comprehend things such as sports. And I don't think it will change.

But they are the best 0-4 team in the NFL.

I'm not saying I'm *dumping* them for a *better* team... where did I say that? I said I was trying to put a finger on why I haven't been supporting them as I did in the past, or why I haven't been as much of a fan. It's not like I'm out there, "hey I need a new team... fuck the Bills suck." I can't make myself stay with them... I haven't "looked" at other teams... I dunno. It's odd.
