Without reading what the sculptor's statements, I just assumed it was either a crass, self-promotional piece, or some sort of commentary on the culture of celebrity, luxury and excess.

The actual motivation was rather less interesting. Pro-choice/life.

Hah! Let me know how that works out for you. The doc doesn't even show up until you are pretty much ready to push so you are surrounded by nurses 'checking your progress' until then. If you're really lucky you'll get a student doc or 2 to check up on you as well.

Women in labor are probably a perverts wet dream....they could touch and no one would question.
