Theodore Roosevelt 1919
This quote brings up a topic that has been bugging me for some time now. People who use titles such as African-American, Italian-American or Spanish-American have always pissed me off. I always thought of them as racist in a way. Looking for special treatment because they weren't white. I don't judge people by their ethnicity, only by their actions.
If you are born in the United States, you are either an American or
Now, I can see someone coming from an African country and becoming a US citizen being called an African-American. It's the bruthas in the hood demanding to be called African-American (when they are clearly American) that piss me off to the highest extent.
Anyone else feel something similar? Maybe not as hostile as I am? Anyone?
It's all a pile of bullshit political correctness that's been prevelant in this countery for about the past 10 years or so and it's just getting worse.
Omg, who gives a fuck? You'd actually get upset if I called myself Scottish-American? I'm hardly that... my family has been in the states for 300 years. I could call myself marsian and it shouldn't make any difference to you.

I don't think American is a race at all, unless you are speaking of native American. Personally I find it stupid when people say I'm something-American due to this fact. Yes you live in America, you are an American in that sense, but when it comes to race and ethnicity, unless you are a Native American keep the word American out of it.
When someone's asks my heritage or race, I tell them I am mainly Czechslovakian with a little bit of Portuguese and British. I don't call myself a "Czechslovakian-American".
I just don't get using the term American as part of a racial identifier either I guess.

Maybe they are showing pride in 'both' cultures? An old woman who got her citizenship in the 30s might call herself a Czech-American as a way to show pride for her 'past' culture as well as her adopted home. She's an American, yes, but she's from Czhechslovakia - and now you know.
Clearly worth starting a rant over... surely.
Or is it just a, "I want to bash black people" thing?

Using a color swatch seems so much more appropriate.

Reading comprehension for the loss, Vonk!
Go back to my original post and you will see that I have no problem with people who gained citizenship after coming to the US from another country using the term "X-American."
This was not an excuse to bash anyone of any race other than those that use the "-American" after their race. It just fires me up and mo's Teddy quote just sparked the flame. I don't feel the need to walk the earth calling myself Caucasian-American. And if anyone did call themselves that they would be looked at as racist or an attention whore. That's how I see the people that do.
As for the "worth starting a rant" thing, I have seen far less worthwhile rants come out of many people on this board. I'm very sure that if I dig deep enough I could find some stupid rants you've started...
This was very much a black thing... 99 out of a 100 times I hear the term "blahblah-American," the prefix is "African."
Feel free to rant about whatever you want... I just think it's silly that someone would sit there and get pissy anytime they hear the term... I mean, it annoys me when I see someone type, "ur" or "thru" but I don't get that bent out of shape about it... "Have a problem with". I'm Scottish-American. Does that make your skin crawl?

Where are you from, Vonk? I know when I was growing up all I heard was Italian-American and German-American. I never heard African-American (it was always Black) until I was away from Rhode Island after I turned 18.
It is a black thing to you because you only see (or hear) what you want to see (or hear). It seems like you got a little Mindia in you...

I know what most people call them: LAZY among other flavorful speech.

You guys really are scared of black people.
My earliest ancestors in this country were afraid of black people. In fact one of them own 1000 of them and grew some pretty good tabacco from what I have read. I guess I should feel bad because my ancestors "were the man" but its really just ancient history.

that bonehead with the blog said america is a huge place, encompassing both north and south america......
what about central america?
genius
i think the whole idea is based on people spending most of their lives trying to find the one uique thing about themselves and depserately finding an identity from that....
whether it is being a gangster, a republican, someone who has roots from another country-american, a type of christian, muslim, buddhist, etc.....
Hey.. come on... I mean. It's not like it's ROCKET SURGERY....

Vonk - I understand saying your culture is American, I just don't think technically anyone can claim American as their race unless they are a Native American.
I get what you are saying as far as using it to show cultural pride. My comment was just about what race people are.
It doesn't make me mad or rant or anything, I just think its a funny thing to ponder.

I'm Native-American / African-American / and......oooh Czech-American...but then again...with that would I be Slovakian-American or Czech-American?
Honestly, who gives a shit. American isn't a race because the United States is such a diverse region. There's millions of people of all different races here. I'm from the United States, but I'll be damned if I give up my heritage because some yahoo says
"There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all"
As bold as a statement that was, it's a pile of bullshit. People realize that they are "American Citizens" but they don't forget where their families came from. The fact that there isn't a divided allegiance with all the ethnic backgrounds our countrie houses is something to respect...not write off as bullshit because someone is proud of their background.
