The ideal amount of reps one should do for tummy exercises? I was thinking of doing crunches and situps on a daily basis, but am not sure how many I should do to start off with. Also, are situps/crunches a good idea or are there more effective home exercises for the tummy?

Cardio will get rid of the fat, the reps will help define the muscle with in the abs..
20 - 25 is usually good - more than that and form tends to suffer
