U.S. Attorney General Gonzales Questions Habeas Corpus

In one of the most chilling public statements ever made by a U.S. Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales questioned whether the U.S. Constitution grants habeas corpus rights of a fair trial to every American.

Perhaps someone should introduce this dumb shit to the 9th Amendment.

The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

I saw that, and the term "Chilling" was most apt. That man is supposedly in the highest law enforcement position in the land, and he's sitting there, straight-faced, and saying that the Constitution does *NOT* guarantee habeas corpus????? I literally was speechless. I couldn't believe he actually made that argument.

It's just further proof of what I've been saying all along: The Bush administration has no regard for the constitutionality of ANY of its positions. They are interested in one thing, and one thing only: Power. Unfortunately, they have had an extremely tame congress which abrogated its responsibilities towards checking that power, and we're going to pay for it for a long time. But ye gods, I don't think there's a rational person alive that isn't blinded by ideological factors that would accept that man's argument, and thus sweepingly deny habeus Corpus to the american public... Was glad to see Specter, a republican, just as flabbergasted as I was.

no...they don't...the constitution is constantly being torn apart by our contemporary government and law offices...
